A New Day

I woke up early this morning to watch our country make history. I am in the country at a resort spa about 60km east of Helsinki in the small town of Porvoo, Finland on the sea. We are 9hrs ahead of the polls closing at home so I watched the results early Wed morning with Europe. After 8 tough years, the excitement here is unbelievable. Finnish TV is calling this the new American dream.

This is a day of hope not fear, of progress not threats, of cooperation not conflict, of common ground not misunderstanding, of addressing problems not creating strife.

Remember where you were today as we are witnessing a change of monumental importance for America. This is our chance to join the world community, address and embrace our differences, tackle environmental and energy issues, and to learn to communicate with our fellow world citizens. What a future we have!

On Obama...time will tell on results, circumstances and the future...however I agree so strongly with Bill that this is a transformative time and unique historical event and has the potential to change the future into a far better place...aspects of tolerance, acceptance and embracing diversity in all its variety, moving away from trying to control people's personal life and moving to more important issues in the world (for example, global warming and sustainability, energy independence, stopping an illegal and wrong war [longer than WWII], beginning to heal the international divisiveness that the Bush era has brought us). And we need to now place a massive effort on finding and implementing complex solutions to our massive financial problems.

Through our new president, we can potentially move away from fear as a way to control the political agenda to a sense of hope...true authentic hope and belief in the future where we are brought together as a society, not torn apart. We now have a chance to move from blind nationalism to a sense of real belief in the integration of ideas, innovation and passion for our society which also builds on our belief in ourselves and our future.

There is a reason why a massive number of people who watch and listen to America throughout the world have such a commitment to Obama, more so than anyone for close to fifty years. Being overseas for many years has provided me with a perspective I hold dear in which I believe I am able to appreciate (and criticize) what makes America so unique...Well now we have a chance to build back to a country of leadership in which we can become a true leader, (not of power, wealth, ego and might), but of showing how we can lead and benefit the world, our society and community in the key issues of our time.
